    Virtual Health Institute 2020 Recap

    If you attended or sent your program’s health staff to the Virtual Health Institute, we want to say THANK YOU! Nearly 600 health staff and leaders from more than 10 states attended the virtual event on Sept. 14-16.

    How accurately are you tracking your services?

    With ever-changing conditions impacting your programs, it is important to stay up to speed with “all things data”. OHS has continued funding your programs so that you can serve your families and their children in any way possible. Accompanying this funding commitment is an expectation to count those services, both traditional and newly virtual, so that they can quantify the federal investment. Many programs have not implemented successful ways to do this, as most of us are just trying to figure everything out!

    MDI 2020: Thanks for helping to make our first virtual conference a success!

    Head Start California’s first ever Virtual Managers & Directors Institute held this past month was a huge success, thanks to you, our Head Start Leaders. Nearly 500 Head Start Managers and Directors made the pivot to virtual with HSC! It was an exciting two days of workshops, Q&A time with speakers, a live stream session and several interactive opportunities. We are so thankful and happy that you joined us!

    Conference Registration Launch to be Delayed Amid Coronavirus Concerns

    Provide your agency information to help inform the HSC Board
    Head Start California was scheduled to launch registration for our Policy & Leadership Conference (May 18-20) on Monday, March 16. We are delaying attendee and Corporate Partner registration until after the matter is discussed with the Board of Directors on March 23, 2020.
    At this time, we have not made a decision about whether or not to cancel the conference. There are many unknowns at this moment.

    Head Start California visits lawmakers on Capitol Hill

    The weather was cool, but not snowy, in our nation’s Capital last week, when 48 members of our California Head Start community participated in NHSA’s Winter Leadership Institute. Workshops covered a variety of important topics including enrollment, workforce, trauma-informed care and immigration, to name a few.     Uncommon Execution: The Path to Becoming Great Advocates for Head Start

    The core value of Head Start California is advocacy. As we move forward into the new fiscal year and into future legislative sessions, one of the best investments we can make is in our capacity to engage in our advocacy work. One of the challenges we face is how we each perceive and understand the rules around advocacy and how that is distinguished from lobbying. These kinds of questions can sometimes raise anxiety levels for Head Start leaders as well as the staff and parents who look to them for guidance.

    Preschool Development Grant: Planning and Input at Cluster 8 Meeting

    Kudos to Jodie Keller and Brian Heese in Cluster 8 for working with West Ed to give their region an opportunity for input into the Preschool Development Grant (PDG) planning process. This is an important initiative that will impact the entire ECE landscape.
    More than 50 Head Start management and staff provided their insights on how to improve and align the system of childcare from the perspective of children and families.
    WestEd is working this summer to collect input for the Preschool Development Grant from the field in a variety of venues.
